Comic Con India helped turn comics, cosplay and fandom into a mainstream cultural calendar. In just a few years it scaled from a single hall to events drawing hundreds of thousands of fans nationwide.
Comic Con India, abbreviated CCI, is a series of annual comic-based conventions held across India. The first edition took place in New Delhi in 2011, launched by Jatin Varma, the event's founder and managing director. It was modeled on the international comic convention format and aimed at giving Indian comics, creators and fans a dedicated stage.
From that single Delhi event, the convention expanded into a national circuit. Over the years it has been held in cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata, with annual editions now running in these cities. Cumulatively the events have drawn over 200,000 visitors and more than 1,200 exhibitors.
In 2014, Comic Con India began operating in collaboration with ReedPop, the company behind major international events such as New York Comic Con and MCM London Comic Con. The partnership connected the Indian convention to a global network of pop-culture events and helped professionalize its scale and programming.
Cosplay has been central to the convention from the start. At the first Comic Con in 2011 there were only 13 cosplay participants, but by 2017 the number of cosplayers had crossed 2,000. The growth mirrored the broader rise of fandom culture in India, where dressing as comic, film and game characters became a marquee attraction.
Comic Con India also runs the Indian Championship of Cosplay. Winners from the cosplay competitions held in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune advance as finalists, and the national champion goes on to represent India at the international Crown Championships of Cosplay at the Chicago event. In 2018, Mumbai cosplayer Jeet Molankar won the Indian championship for portraying Reinhardt from the video game Overwatch.
The conventions have drawn a steady stream of international comics talent. Past guests have included Archie Comics artist Dan Parent, Dinosaur Comics creator Ryan North, multiple Eisner Award winner Sonny Liew, and Larry Hama, among others. The events have also featured guests from beyond comics, reflecting how the conventions span the wider pop-culture spectrum.
Just as importantly, Comic Con India has created space for homegrown creators. Indian artists such as Abhijeet Kini, an illustrator for Tinkle, Sailesh Gopalan of the webcomic Brown Paperbag, and others have held sessions at the events, while Indian publishers and independent creators use the floor to launch and sell their work directly to readers.
Beyond comics and cosplay, editions have featured experiential and gaming zones, exclusive merchandise, and esports finals, broadening the appeal to a young, fandom-driven audience. By giving comics a recurring, large-scale public platform, Comic Con India has become a significant driver of the country's modern comics and pop-culture scene.
